The course is a graduate coursefor students of the MA in European Studies (double degree) and it offered in English. It is open to other students of the School of Political Sciences and the Aristotle University. It aims to develop a theory-based understanding of European governance (that is,the political system of the EU and its processes of policymaking) and to encourage an empirical analysis of the most important European policies in the era of poly-crisis. The course begins with a discussion of theories of European integration, including neofunctionalism, intergovernmentalism, liberal intergovernmentalism, the new institutionalisms and post-functionalism. It then studies the vertical and horizontal separation of powers in the EU and focuses on the main concepts and issues developed in the context of the ‘governance approach’ (multi-level governance, EU policy networks and Europeanization). Finally, it examines the most important areas of EU policy activity (the Single Market, Economic and Monetary Union, the EU budget, interior policies and foreign policies) in the light of the dramatic developments that have taken place over the past fifteen years.
The lectures are structured as follows:
